Albany, oldest town on the Northwest Frontier, has strong ties to its past. It is located in Shackelford County at the junction of highways 180 and 283.

In 1874, settlers sought law and order apart from the wide open town of Fort Griffin, and moved the county seat 16 miles south to a location they named “Albany.” First they built a strong stone jail, and 11 years later an imposing courthouse. Both buildings still exist. The jail, officially known as “The Old Jail,” is a prestigious art center with archives while the old courthouse is restored and well worth touring. Today, Albany’s main street is a cultural gem where restored buildings house shops, restaurants, and theaters while the old MK&T depot serves as a Visitor Center. Citizens are friendly and like local history, fine art and performing. Each year in June, the Fort Griffin Fandangle tells our story.

The unsurpassed big game and bird hunting on area ranches makes Shackelford County a perfect destination. Bring your family for a visit.

If you’re looking for a get-away that combines rare, historical atmosphere with no hassle, regular cultural events, friendly people, good food, a great museum, remarkable shopping, a beautifully restored Main Street, inspiring War Memorials, a hunters’ paradise, a variety of accommodations and much more, load up the whole family or just your sweetie and head to Albany.

Whether you arrive in the family car or a corporate jet at the Albany airport, HATS OFF AND WELCOME!
